Before 2001 Alaska.com existed as a business directory owned by Anchorage-based General Communications Inc. (GCI). The Daily News acquired the domain from GCI and in August 2001 launched the state's first geoportal, providing a broad array of visitor information and services, Alaska news, business directory and gateways to the newspaper's classifieds products.
Alaska.com has won several national and state awards, including these: bronze award, best travel Web site, 2002, Society of American Travel Writers; runner-up, best Web site in our newspaper circulation category, 2001, Editor & Publisher magazine's Eppy awards; and best newspaper Web site in Alaska, 2001, 2002 and 2003, Alaska Press Club.
By mid-2003 we realized that most of our visitors were looking for Alaska travel information and services and that some things that were better left to the newspaper's Web site, so we refocused and redesigned the site around Alaska travel. We hope you enjoy the results.
As always, your feedback and questions are welcome.
